New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
