Earth could be under pressure, but a sense of hope remains. A fresh honor originating at the science, music and arts festival the Starmus festival seeks to inspire individuals to make a difference.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name will be given to pay tribute to the esteemed British primatologist who passed away recently. It seeks to acknowledge those who advocate for our planet's biodiversity.

The Medal's Framework

The inaugural winners are slated for announcement at the Starmus VIII festival in Tenerife and La Palma, scheduled from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

Reports indicate that Goodall, a former member of the festival's board, had endorsed the award’s creation. “The idea of having this award, and Starmus being entrusted to oversee it, was Jane's wish,” a representative said. “Her desire was she would like for this to occur. This is likely due to the unique relationship she had with us.”

“This medal will acknowledge sustainable programmes carried out to create a planet a better place for people, animals and the environment and provide encouragement to continue such efforts,” commented a relative.

Format and Inspiration

A co-founder of the festival noted that the medal – which was announced at a prestigious venue – would probably include several divisions.

“It’s going to be modeled after the Stephen Hawking medal honoring scientific outreach that we created exactly 10 years ago,” he explained. Jane Goodall was a recipient of that very medal.

Expressing concern on the outlook of the planet, one figure said, “Frankly, it's challenging to be optimistic. The current political climate globally is conducting a war on science. So this significantly hampers collective action.”

“Realistically, the situation appears particularly bright which means we need to begin to reconsidering, more deeply regarding the impact of human activity. And that’s not just climate change, but also the whole way that we treat nature.”

Inspiring Change

Therefore, observers believe this is an opportune moment to follow her guiding principles. “I think that when we’re awarding this medal, we will be considering this essential spirit of Jane’s – that was her foremost concern, to change how we regard fellow creatures around us.”

A major topic currently is the proliferation of false information. The focus of the upcoming Starmus festival will be “the pursuit of factual understanding”.

“There is a recognition that factual reality is becoming a subject of discussion when politics are involved. This is a perilous development,” it was said. “The science of climate is a science; it is impossible to have any influence by political agendas in climate science.”

Optimism and Resolve

The goal remains that the medal will inspire action. “It’s about encouraging people to engage and to care and to work toward these goals, really. Whether or not we feel hopeful, we must focus on working all that is possible,” it was added. “Be prepared for failure, but you still have to work towards succeeding.”

A family member engaged in environmental protection expressed confidence that “with guidance and once enabled, humanity can be conscientious guardians of Earth”, citing the programs of a foundation that, among its other activities, helps the youth get involved locally, wildlife, and environment.

“As my late grandmother repeatedly reminded us, the choices we make each day have an impact and it is up to us what type of impact we choose to create,” it was stated. “There is still time and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will provide inspiration and raise awareness about constructive efforts that people are making.”
