Resurgent Medvedev Wins First Championship in Nearly 30 Months

Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 victories have been earned on hard courts

A comeback Medvedev secured his first championship for nearly 30 months with a win over Corentin Moutet in the tournament final.

Medvedev, a former top-ranked player, has experienced a challenging period, managing just one win at the Grand Slams and suffering a setback at the New York tournament.

His inconsistency on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his serving in especial - resulted in him exiting of the world's top 10 and finally splitting with former mentor Gilles Cervara.

Presently working with Johansson and Goetzke, Medvedev has consistently advanced in the past month - peaking in a closely contested three-set triumph over Frenchman Moutet.

It is his maiden championship following the Rome competition and first on a hard court since spring of that year.

The win also indicates the Russian has secured twenty-one titles at 21 various tournaments.

"For the first time I am participating in a event with my children at once, so to get a championship is particularly special," stated world number 14 Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my younger daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I got when my first daughter her name was born was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his previous six championship matches, including in the German tournament earlier this year.

His retrieving strategy and recurring emotional displays on court had caused observers to question if his capacity to perform at the top level was over.

However the player has made changes in the past month, striving to come to the net and compete positively, supported by an improved serve.

Medvedev came back from a break down in the initial set against the challenging Frenchman, winning 4 of the concluding five games to go ahead.

Both players exchanged breaks in the middle set before Moutet, striving for his initial tour title, seized the initiative to force a final set.

Moutet saved 4 early chances in a close final set before the champion won the break to fifteen to serve for the match.

Fittingly, Medvedev secured the win with a rally at the net area, with his opponent incapable to manage a shot after a lengthy match.
